Dense Gas in the Milky Way

چکیده
We present a study of dense gas emission in the Milky Way in order to serve as a basis for comparison with extragalactic results. This study combines new observations of HCN, CS, and CO in individual GMCs and in the Milky Way plane with published studies of emission from these molecules in the inner 500 pc of the Milky Way. We find a strong trend in the fraction of emission from dense gas tracers as a function of location in the Milky Way: in the bulge, IHCN/ICO = 0.081 ± 0.004, in the plane, IHCN/ICO = 0.026 ± 0.008 on average, and over the full extent of nearby GMCs, IHCN/ICO = 0.014 ± 0.020. Similar trends are seen in ICS/ICO: in the bulge, ICS/ICO = 0.027 ± 0.006, in the plane, ICS/ICO = 0.018 ± 0.008 on average, and over the full extent of nearby GMCs, ICS/ICO = 0.013 ± 0.02. The low intensities of the HCN and CS emission in the plane suggests that these lines are produced by gas at moderate densities; they are thus not like the emission produced by the dense, pc-scale star forming cores in nearby GMCs. The contrast between the bulge and disk ratios in the Milky Way is likely to be caused by a combination of higher kinetic temperatures as well as a higher dense gas fraction in the bulge of the Milky Way. We show that the ratio IHCN/ICO is correlated quantitatively with the total hydrostatic gas pressure in the Milky Way as IHCN/ICO ∝ P. Synthesis Imaging of Dense Gas in Nearby Galaxies
We present images of the HCN J = 1-0 emission from five nearby spiral galaxies made with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association interferometer. The HCN observations comprise the first high-resolution (θ ∼ 5– 10) survey of dense molecular gas from a sample of normal galaxies, rather than galaxies with prolific starburst or nuclear activities. The images show compact structure, demonstrating ...

Recent spectroscopic observations of intermediate-and high-velocity clouds (IVCs and HVCs) in the Milky Way halo have unveiled the presence of diffuse interstellar molecular hydrogen (H 2) several kpc away from the Galactic disk. Most of this H 2 gas appears to reside in relatively small (∼ 0.1 pc), dense (n H ≈ 30 cm −3) gaseous filaments that probably are part of the cold neutral medium (CNM)...
متن کاملA Molecular Gas Bridge between the Taffy Galaxies
The Taffy Galaxies system, UGC 12914/5, contains huge amounts of molecular gas in the bridge region between the receding spirals after a direct collision. 2 − 9 × 10M⊙ of molecular gas is present between the galaxies, more than the CO emission from the entire Milky Way! Such dense gas can only be torn off by collisions between dense clouds, in this case with relative velocities of about 800 kms...
متن کاملH 2 absorption in a dense interstellar filament in the Milky Way halo
We investigate interstellar absorption from molecular hydrogen (H2) and metals in an intermediatevelocity cloud (IVC) in the direction of the LMC star Sk -68 80 (HD36521), based on data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite. H2 absorption from the Lymanand Werner bands is detected in 30 lines at radial velocities vLSR ≈ +50 km s −1 in this IVC that is presumably locat...
متن کاملA FUSE Survey of Molecular Hydrogen in Intermediate-Velocity Clouds in the Milky Way Halo
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) data is used to investigate the molecular hydrogen (H2) content of intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs) in the lower halo of the Milky Way. We analyze interstellar absorption towards 56 (mostly extragalactic) background sources to study H2 absorption in the Lymanand Werner bands in 61 IVC components at H i column densities ≥ 10 cm. For data with good...
